May 18, 2011 Update: After I originally posted this, my logfiles indicated this page received a flurry of visits from various internal Google offices. Plus I got a couple tweets from Matt Cutts. Note that I did not contact anyone at Google directly (I don't really have any means for doing so) But as of today, the 18th – a LOT of these sites can no longer be found in Google. So I guess they are aware and cleaning them up. My alerts, while not totally clean yet, are much much improved. Credit where credit is due. Google acted. I only wish it were easier to report things like this, rather than try to cram them into a set form that doesn't fit the circumstances. Till there is, I'll use the means I have available to me – the blog, twitter, and my honking big mouth. I'm still posting them – I find from 12 to 20 a day – but there are a lot fewer at the moment.
I found hundreds of these last year; they had a slightly different look but with the same type of ads, and they were ranking for cities all over the country right around Fourth of July. Not just small cities either. And the worst part was, they were fucking stealing MY meta description tags, but cloaking them so that only Googlebot would pick them up – so they displayed in the SERP. Couldn't see it by viewing source.
And of course Google just let them accumulate until there were hundreds of thousands of them – by the time they were removed, it was well past Independence Day.
Today (May 6, 2011) they started showing up in my Google Alerts again. And so it begins. Will Google act? Probably not. But I'm going to keep a list.
Bear in mind that I'm only using a very small sample in my Alerts – two words. Times this times how many other search strings, and you can see how rapidly and how far this is proliferating.
